Nytro is an in-development exploration and collectible-focused 3D platformer game inspired by the original Spyro trilogy. Charge, jump, glide, and swim around colorful worlds, collecting bolts and golden gears to unlock new worlds to explore.

Available now is an early playable demo for showcasing and collecting feedback on the game's basic movement controls. There are 60 bolts and 4 golden gears scattered across the compact test scene.

Camera modes

The following camera modes are available:

  • Active mode is strict and aggressive, requiring clear intent to temporarily break free from automatic control. This is a great mode to use when playing with a gamepad, as it lets the game deal with the grunt work of manipulating the camera while traversing the environment. As such, it is the default mode when a gamepad is detected on game start. Note, however, that there are improvements planned for this mode and that passive may still provide a smoother experience with a gamepad for now.

  • Passive mode is relatively relaxed, allowing the player to look around while walking, swimming on the surface of water, gliding, or performing other relatively gentle actions. Rough motions that would make independent camera control difficult, such as charging, still trigger recentering. Smart controls combined with the freedom to look around makes this the ideal mode for a keyboard and mouse. And, indeed, it is the default mode when no gamepad is detected on game start.

  • Follow only mode leaves camera orbiting entirely up to the player's discretion. This is great for taking screenshots or planning routes while charging. To enable this mode, cycle through the camera modes.

The current camera mode can be changed at any time by pressing 'c' on your keyboard, with each press cycling to the next mode.

Known issues

  • Missing or incomplete sound effects and animations. Swimming, in particular, uses above ground animations as temporary placeholders.

  • Nothing happens yet when health is depleted. Damage and respawning is the project's current focus of development.

  • On Linux, the game's executable files may need permission to be executed. This is a checkbox in the files' properties.

Saving progress

Although saving has been fully implemented, it has been disabled for the demo to facilitate replayability.
